Lightroom presets come in different file formats, each of which is compatible with specific versions of Lightroom. Let's take a look at the three main preset formats: .xmp, .lrtemplate, and .dng.
.XMP Presets:
Compatible with Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.3 and later), Lightroom CC (cloud-based version), and Adobe Camera Raw.
.LRTEMPLATE Presets:
- Compatible with Lightroom 4, 5, 6, and Lightroom Classic CC (version 7.2 and earlier).
- These presets are based on the older .lrtemplate format, which is specific to Lightroom.
- .lrtemplate presets are not compatible with the newer versions of Lightroom Classic CC and Lightroom CC (cloud-based) without conversion.
.DNG Presets:
- Compatible with Lightroom Mobile (iOS and Android), as well as Lightroom CC (cloud-based) and Lightroom Classic CC.
- These presets are actually DNG (Digital Negative) image files containing the preset settings embedded as metadata
